This is a self portrait. Doppelgänger is the ghostly double of a living person, a sinister form of bilocation.The word is also used to describe the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection.

This photograph was taken in Transkei, South Africa. The girl was running towards me in the hope to score some of my Manhatten wine gums. Manhattan is a South African brand of soft candy, wine gums - I love them. btw - she got the gums...

Again this is part of a series of photographs I have done for Ulricke Lourens. This is the unedited version - the final works consist of photographs with maps juxtaposed in layers onto body parts/skin. It was on exhibition for a show called "Find" in 2007.

This is not a train. It might be a bus. Shot through the back window on my way home. Again - no focus but blur. Makes a train look like a bus.

I can think of 14 reasons why this might be considered a bad photograph. I can think of 104 reasons why I like this photo - this is jokingly working with the "quality of light", "window lighting" and "freeze action".

Again, this photograph was taken at North Beach, Durban. Nadia walked up to me asking for money - I said that I didn't have any, only a camera. She asked me to photograph her. I felt uncomfortable doing so as she posed on the beach mimicking Shakira... I took this shot just before I put my camera away.

I would like to refer to this photo as a "candid street photograph". The photo was taken at North Beach, Durban. Durban's usually bustling with street child colonies and some are charged for loitering and given fines they cannot afford. I call her "Miss" - Miss was formerly the default title for a businesswoman, but it is also a notable title for a beauty queen.

Instead of restoring images digitally I like to experiment with the idea of "damaging" the image instead. Unfortunately it has become a trend to scratch and "grunge up" what you've got, but I still like the idea of it...

This is part of a series of photographs I did for Ulricke Lourens. Ulricke used the images to create her artwork with stop frame animation. It was called "Bondage". The skin colour in contrast to the ribbon reminds me of a crossed process slide film.

Unexpected elements in a landscape might create a great photo, but it might create a surrealistic stereotype as well. By positioning the female body in an enigmatic environment, I'm negotiating with kitsch. This environment, surreal and timeless, forms a backdrop for a constructed ideal of the engendered social being. Or not. The truth is... I saw this on my way back from Pretoria to Durban and thought it was cool. There is no theory behind this besides the fact that it reminded me of a Dali or Magritte landscape...
